The Ocean Reef Senior High School Year 11 student had one hour to write and record her speech before it was uploaded to the internet for a public vote.

More than 600 indigenous students in years 10 to 12 entered The Other Election by AIME, with the top 10 mentored by industry experts in Sydney.

‘It was pretty hectic because I got into the top 10 and then they said, ‘You’re coming to Sydney’,’ Mikayla said. ‘It came out of nowhere.’

‘My parents thought it was awesome, they were my main supporters ” my mum got me heaps of votes through her work.’

Studying psychology and human biology, Mikayla wants to one day work in a job where she can help people, such as nursing, psychology or Aboriginal health.
