Students get chance to pit skills as crew

Studying a Certificate II in motorsport and vehicle servicing, they helped the racing teams of 15 V8 utes, two saloon cars and a touring car masters vehicle.

Motorsport lecturer Vaughn Brewer has led the students into the annual V8 event for the past three years.

‘The life and work experience they get at a race meeting like this you just can’t simulate in a classroom,’ he said.

‘Students get such a buzz out of being amongst the action ” networking with professional race car drivers, handling high-quality industry equipment and working alongside the best people in the business.’

The students worked under pressure, honing their skills in re-fuelling, wheel alignments, brake inspections, cleaning and panel damage.

Motorsport Student Matt Crump (16) from St Stephen’s School in Duncraig worked with the pit crew of V8 ute driver Ryal Harris.

‘This experience is a great opportunity,’ Matt said.

‘From changing wheels, fixing parts and getting the cars ready to race ” everything we’ve been taught in the classroom all comes together here, that’s for sure.’

– Sydneysider Andrew ‘Fishtail’ Fisher, driver of the Jesus Racing V8 ute, is visiting local high schools this week.

He has visited Ashdale Secondary College and will visit Quinns Baptist and Kinross colleges on Friday.
