Taking pledge in true Aussie style

There have been citizenship ceremonies conducted in the open on Australian Day or inside civic chambers, but never before has one been held at a footy oval in the northern suburbs before a game involving the WA Football League’s oldest club West Perth and Subiaco.

Joondalup Mayor Troy Pickard, a guest speaker at a Falcons pre-game function to celebrate international round and the northern corridor’s multiculturalism, welcomed the new Australians in the City of Joondalup-run ceremony.

Mr Pickard said for many it would be their first experience of Aussie Rules and he encouraged them to ‘drop by the Arena this week and become a member of the West Perth Football Club’.

He hoped the day would have great significance. ‘May your new beginning today be everything you hoped and more,’ he said.
