Tapping PS students uncover mystery of UFO landing

AN UNIDENTIFIED flying object (UFO) landed at Tapping Primary School this month with students tasked with the responsibility of uncovering the mystery of how it got there.

The alien landing activity was part of a Talk4Writing teaching program, developed in the United Kingdom by literacy specialist and writer Pie Corbett.

Students arrived at the northern suburbs school one morning to find green footprints believed to be left by an alien before a conversation was heard over the public announcement system about the sudden appearance of a UFO.

Teacher Deanne Tuckett said the students rushed outside to find that an alien spaceship had crash-landed on the school oval, raising questions of how it got there, where the aliens had gone and where it came from.

“Activities like the alien landing provide a ‘hook’ for writing which fires up the creativity and imagination of the children before they are immersed in the model text,” the Madeley resident said.

“It provides a clear framework to students on the aspects of different genres in a multi-faceted approach which assists with retainment and encourages greater self-confidence in students in their writing ability.”
