Celebrating more than six decades of love, Carmela (83) and husband Joe (88) celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on June 11.

Born into immigrant Sicilian families from the same village, Carmela and Joe’s love story dates back to their childhood.

‘We were engaged when I was 17-and-a-half and married when I was 18 at St Anthony’s in Wanneroo,’ Mrs Sinagra said.

Since then, the couple have brought five children into the world and are now the proud grandparents of 20 grand children and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs Sinagra said she could not have hoped for a better anniversary.

‘I had the biggest surprise I have ever had,’ she said.

‘Usually on a birthday or celebration my sister invites us out for a meal and because it was our anniversary she invited us for lunch to Foo Hua Chinese Restaurant.

‘When we got there, there were a whole lot of family and friends there to surprise us, it was the best kept secret.’

The celebrations didn’t stop there, with a trip to Limelight Theatre to see Nunsense II and a visit from their grandchildren over the weekend. Having lived in Wanneroo all their lives, the couple are also recipients of the council’s Pioneer Medallion.
