SWIM schools across Perth will hold open days and free swimming assessments with The Royal Life Saving Society over the next two months.

The recent Royal Life Saving National Drowning Report showed that during the 2017-18 financial year, 27 people lost their life to drowning in WA.

While it was a 31 per cent reduction on the previous year, the majority of drowning deaths occurred in the spring and summer period and the society is urging people not to be complacent.

It will hold swim school open days at selected endorsed swim schools throughout WA between October 4 and December 9.

Swimming and water safety education senior manager Trent Hotchkin said parents could find out about options available at the schools to improve their children’s swimming ability.

“A key activity at each swim school open day will be to provide a free swimming assessment to help parents determine what level their child is at,” he said.

“As well as the free swimming assessment, each pool will host a number of different attractions to get the whole family involved.

“That may include pool inflatable sessions, barbeques, aquatic games and activities, pool demonstrations and giveaways.”

Since the introduction of the Swim and Survive Program in 1982, drowning rates in Australia for five to 14-year-olds have fallen from 7.1 to 0.85 per 100,000 population.
