A LANDSDALE family will attend this weekend’s official opening of a playground built in their son’s honour.

The City of Wanneroo and Matthew and Lyndal Trott, whose toddler son Sam died at the site in 2014, will celebrate the launch of the $280,000 nature play area at Warradale Park in Landsdale on Saturday.

Mayor Tracey Roberts said thousands of people had visited the playground since it opened in August.

“When the decision was made to create a memorial to Sam the consensus was always that it would be an uplifting tribute celebrating his life,” she said.

“Sam’s family wanted to give back to the community who supported them and they have been instrumental in creating this magnificent facility for the community.

“I know Sam’s mother Lyndal has taken comfort watching children play and families having a great time together.

“The Trott family’s selflessness in turning their heartache into joy for others is so courageous and an inspiration to all.”

Mrs Roberts said as a tribute to Sam, the City worked with the family and the Autism Association of WA on the project to ensure it incorporated activities suitable for children with autism.

The playground is fenced and includes slides, swings, a timber tepee and musical instruments.

The opening event is from noon on Saturday.
