Joondalup Mayor participates in Walk to Work Day for Diabetes prevention.

In its 16th year, Walk to Work Day encourages workplaces to commit to walking 1km to work and build regular walking into their daily routine.

Mr Pickard said adding walking to his day could be difficult but was beneficial.

‘I find walking helps clear my mind and gives me more energy to get through the day,’ he said.

Ocean Reef MLA Albert Jacob is also taking part, representing State Government ministers in Walk to Work Day.

‘I usually work at my electorate office at Currambine Central on Fridays so I have to confess that I won’t be walking 15km to my office, but 1.5km from my home,’ he said.

Diabetes affects more than 1.7 million Australians and studies have shown that in up to 58 per cent of cases in the high-risk population, Type 2 diabetes could be prevented, with the addition of daily walking and a healthy diet helping to reduce the risk.
