BEST friends Wil Schwagermann (8) and Lily McCain (8) are teaming up with their families for this weekend’s Step UP! for Down Syndrome in Victoria Park.
Their team, The Wil and Lil Squad, set a $1000 fundraising target for the October 15 event at McCallum Park.
Nikki Schwagermann said her family had taken part in the annual walk every year since Wil was five months old and it was a way they could give back to Down Syndrome WA.
“They helped me in the early days,” she said, adding she had received new parent packs and education support from the organisation.
Mrs Schwagermann said it also helped her meet other families with children who had Down syndrome through morning teas and playgroups.
The Wanneroo boy recently featured in a Best & Less retail chain catalogue after being selected in a national talent search.
“He loves being in front of the camera and seeing himself in the catalogue,” Mrs Schwagermann said.
“He was taking that around and showing everyone.
“As a family we think that’s important to show diversity in advertising.”
He beat more than 720 children to star in the company’s recent school holiday catalogue shoot in Sydney.
Down Syndrome WA’s executive officer Margaret Lawlor said it was great to see the store “showcasing the diversity of their customers”.
Sunday’s 4km walk coincides with Down Syndrome Awareness Month and free activities will include a bouncy castle, face painting, pony rides, animal farm, photo booth, Radio Lollipop, sausage sizzle, food vans and market stalls.
“We are especially keen this year to encourage people to not only come along on the day but, critically, to register and raise funds as a sponsored participant,” Ms Lawlor said.
“The biggest benefit from the event in terms of fundraising comes via individual and team sponsorships.”
