Wanneroo City council approved a limestone quarry proposal in Nowergup

A LIMESTONE quarry proposal in Nowergup was back on the agenda this month.

Wanneroo City Council approved the extractive industry application, subject to conditions, in December 2013 after originally refusing it in July.

The State Administrative Tribunal ordered the City to reconsider the approved conditions after the applicant sought a review of the council’s decision.

City staff reconsidered several conditions, which included modifications to site access, truck route, perimeter fencing, and use of chemicals to treat limestone on site.

Cr Dot Newton moved an amendment at the October council meeting to delete two new conditions allowing hydroxide, calcium and molasses on site.

Cr Dianne Guise said deleting the conditions reflected the council’s original view.

‘This site never intended to be somewhere where manufacturing took place,’ she said.

‘It is not the intent we all envisaged for the area’
