Wanneroo Council endorses community facilities plan for consultation

A PLAN due to go out for public comment this month says building community facilities in north coast suburbs could cost $684 million over the next two decades.

Wanneroo councillors agreed at their March 10 meeting to release a draft review of the City’s Northern Coastal Growth Corridor Community Facilities Plan for public consultation from March 30 to May 10.

The plan by David Lanfear Consulting identified what facilities will need to be built by 2041, proposed locations and staging to develop infrastructure.

The list includes public pools, libraries, community centres, youth and performing arts centres, sports grounds, hard courts, skate parks and surf life saving clubs needed in Alkimos, Eglinton, Yanchep and Two Rocks.

A council report showed the population of the four suburbs was expected to grow from about 20,000 in 2016 to 134,000 in 2041.

The report said population projections showed the corridor would have a growing ageing population, but there was an “immediate need” to address demands of its youth population.

“Established rural areas will see a growth in people ageing place, whereas the new developing areas will experience a higher influx of younger working age households,” it said.

“There are some community facility deficiency issues emerging in the outer-lying areas of Butler and Jindalee, which if repeated in the Northern Coastal Growth Corridor, will give rise to a significant deficit in infrastructure.

“This will adversely impact on social connectivity and the viability of new communities.”

The report said existing facilities such as the Phil Renkin Recreation Centre in Two Rocks, Yanchep Community Centre, Oldham Park and St Andrews Park would need to be replaced or redeveloped.
