SOME residents’ concerns that a playground would limit space for dogs and people playing soccer or cricket did not deter Wanneroo councillors from endorsing its installation.

The council unanimously endorsed the concept plan for playground equipment at Elton Park in Ashby at its October meeting.

According to the council report, the City receive 281 submissions during public consultation about the proposal, with 83 per cent supportive and 16 per cent objected.

Several submissions said it would be good to have a playground to take their children or grandchildren too, but some said it would limit the space to play cricket or soccer and exercise dogs.

Mayor Tracey Roberts said she was pleased the majority of respondents were in favour of the playground.

“As a City we are committed to providing facilities that encourage a healthy and active lifestyle for our residents and this playground will benefit our younger residents as well as their families,” she said.

“I would like to thank the community for their involvement in the consultation process, which in turn helps council with the decision-making process.”

The City plans to start building the pocket park’s playground, including a small combination unit and basket seat swing, in April and complete it by June.

The Ashby playground was one of two proposed in a $170,000 budget allocation this financial year, with the other at Romaine Park in Darch.

The City introduced its playground installation program in 2014-15 and a letter sent to Ashby residents said there were 64 parks that were awaiting playgrounds.
