MONAGHAN Park in Darch will get seniors exercise equipment following Wanneroo Council’s endorsement of a concept plan.

The City plans to use a $61,000 State grant and $20,000 in municipal funds to install the equipment in February to May 2019.

During public consultation, the City received 78 survey responses with 48 of those supporting the proposal.

Some submissions said there were few seniors living near the park, and the report said 2016 Census data showed about 9.3 per cent of the Darch population was aged 60 or older, compared to 13.8 per cent across the City.

“Whilst this may be the case, the seniors exercise space is intended to be used by seniors and people with lower mobility from throughout the broader community,” the report said.

Other parks considered in Darch included Appleby and Belvoir, while in Madeley, the City considered Amstel, Rufus, Susan and Winston parks.

The report said the City chose Monaghan Park because it had good parking and accessibility, and was close to the Darch Medical Centre and public transport.

It said administration proposed to include installation of similar exercise facilities in the Central and North Coast wards in the City’s long term financial plan.

The City will also consider including installation of security lighting at the park in the 2019-20 capital works budget in response to a 48-signature petition lodged in February for lights to improve safety and reduce anti-social behaviour.
