Mrs Roberts extended thanks to Mr Hayden for his service and read out a message from him thanking fellow councillors and staff at the City.

The former police officer was first elected for a South ward seat in 2011 and his second term was due to end at the upcoming local government elections this October.

Another South Ward councillor Lara Simpkins resigned in September 2018, however, the council decided to leave her seat vacant until the ordinary council election this year.

Local governments are usually required to hold an extraordinary election within four months of a seat becoming vacant.

The three remaining South Ward councillors are Brett Treby, whose term ends in October, and Domenic Zappa and Hugh Nguyen, whose terms end in 2021.
