Wanneroo Festival to celebrate cultural diversity

Lucy JarvisWanneroo Times

LOCAL stars performing at the inaugural Wanneroo Festival this weekend will include singer Jordan Anthony and band the Subih Brothers.

Jordan, a Hocking resident, rose to fame in The Voice 2019, while the Ridgewood band of brothers starred in Australia’s Got Talent in 2016.

The free event from 4pm on January 26 will follow the City of Wanneroo’s annual Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony at Wanneroo Showground and celebrate the City’s cultural diversity.

The family-friendly event will feature food trucks serving cuisine from around the world, including Italy, Malaysia, Vietnam, Turkey, UK and the Netherlands.

Roving entertainment will include Chinese lion dancers, Bollywood stilt walkers, African dancers and a Mariachi band.

There will also be cultural activities such as Japanese origami, Chinese calligraphy, Malaysian games, and snake charming.

On the main stage, there will be performances from Aboriginal dance group Djurpin Djindas, The Italycious big band and other groups before the free concert with Jordan and the Subih Brothers.

The evening will close about 8.30pm after a 20-minute fireworks display.

Mayor Tracey Roberts said the festival would follow the country’s largest council-led Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony.

“More than 1000 residents from 65 countries were invited to take the pledge to become a citizen on Australia Day,” she said.

“The City is proud of its diverse population with more than 40 per cent of residents born overseas.

“Our City would not be the vibrant and progressive place it is today without the rich diversity of its people, and the festival will be a wonderful way for everyone to experience and share each other’s culture.”

Last year, the council decided to cancel its annual free Wanneroo Presents concert and introduce the festival, which will be smoke and alcohol-free, to make the most of a large marquee hired for the citizenship ceremony.

There will be general parking off Ariti Avenue, ACROD parking off Noonan Drive and overflow parking at the Wanneroo Civic Centre, 23 Dundebar Road with a free shuttle bus to the venue.
