A ceremonial sod-turning was held last week to mark the start of the $824,000 project.

The Winton Road, Joondalup site has been home to the WJSES since 1984.

The service leases the depot from the City of Joondalup, but a recent Department of Fire and Emergency Services review found the building’s infrastructure needed upgrading.

The project will include a training room, offices, operations room and toilet and showers in a new second storey, refurbishment of the bunker area and carpark, and upgrades to communication and emergency response devices.

The project is a collaboration between the City, DFES and WJSES, with $729,000 funding approved through the Local Government Grants Scheme.

The City has also contributed $95,000 to fund site works, utility upgrades if required and landscaping.

At the City’s February meeting, councillors approved a tender from CPD Group to complete the works.

The project is due to be completed later this year.

While construction is taking place, WJSES has moved to temporary leased accommodation in Wangara.
