Wanneroo Road widening works complete

Lucy JarvisWanneroo Times

WORKS to widen Wanneroo Road finished this week, several months after originally expected.

The $31 million project to widen a 3.2km stretch between Joondalup and Flynn drives started in late 2017 and was originally expected to finish late last year.

It was one of three upgrades on Wanneroo Road, with work recently starting on interchanges at the Joondalup Drive and Ocean Reef Road intersections as well and both expected to finish in mid-2020.

A State Government statement this week said the widened section was a well-known congestion hotspot creating traffic delays both northbound and southbound for more than 26,000 vehicles each day.

“The project has removed a pinch point and alleviated congestion, delivering a huge relief to residents and workers throughout the northern suburbs,” Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said.

“It is only the beginning of our northern suburbs transformation journey – with both Wanneroo Road interchanges at Joondalup Drive and Ocean Reef Road currently under construction.

“Other big projects for the north include the widening of Mitchell Freeway southbound from Cedric Street to Vincent Street, and the recently announced Mitchell Freeway extension to Romeo Road.

“Meanwhile, the Yanchep Rail Extension also gets underway this year.”

Wanneroo MLA Sabine Winton said the community had “long demanded upgrades to this dangerous section of Wanneroo Road”.

“I’ve travelled this stretch of road nearly every day since I was 10 and I know the awful accidents that have occurred between Flynn Drive and Joondalup Drive over the years,” she said.

“Wanneroo Road is the spine that runs through my electorate and I am proud that the McGowan Government has delivered on its commitment to upgrade this important local and regional road.”

Ms Winton said the upgrade would keep people using the road safer and reduce travel times.

The dual carriageway project included intersection upgrades at Golf Links Drive and Carramar Road, along with a principal shared path for cyclists and pedestrians.

It also included noise walls, bus stop facilities, landscaping and U-turn points to provide access to driveways on Wanneroo Road.
