The piece, written to coincide with the Wildcats’ 30th anniversary last year, won the best sports category in the southern division of this year’s Community Newspapers of Australia Awards.

The judges described Donaldson’s work as ‘a very touching piece of journalism’ that was a ‘tragic but important part of this team’s history’.

‘It is based on solid research and numerous interviews, and the result is a fine insight into a team’s culture,’ they said. ‘Very sad, but very well done. Very well-written.’

Donaldson has previously won awards for his sports and feature writing.
