Yanchep students learn road safety for triathlon club

Staff WriterWanneroo Times

YANCHEP students travelled to Constable Care Safety School earlier this term to learn road and bike safety skills in preparation for a triathlon club that will take them on the road.

A group of Yanchep Beach Primary School students aged four to 11 visited the Maylands facility in early March to navigate a model town on bicycles and as pedestrians.

They learnt to interact safely with road signs, traffic lights, railway crossings and potential hazards such as oncoming cars, fallen powerlines and rail pedestrian mazes.

Physical education and Year 3 teacher Kristofer Mihal said that the practical experience would give students the knowledge and understanding they need to stay safe on the road when riding as a class group.

“Our triathlon club will eventually get to the point where we are racing on the roads, so it’s important that we first give our students the skills they need to ride safely,” he said.

Constable Care Child Safety Foundation chief executive David Gribble said early-intervention practical learning was the best way to reduce the number of young people killed or injured on WA roads.

“We want to prevent these incidents by teaching children comprehensive road safety skills as early as possible,” he said.

“Constable Care Safety School gives students the chance to practice encountering hazards in a safe, controlled environment.”
