Opinion: Joondalup arts centre a senseless duplication

Don Odgers, KallarooWanneroo Times

IN all of the arguments for and against the proposed Joondalup Performing Arts and Cultural Centre, something that seems to get lost in the conversation is that most of residents in the City of Joondalup are at most 35 minutes away from fantastic multi-million dollar facilities such as Perth Arena, the Perth Concert Hall and the soon to be opened Perth Stadium at Burswood.

I realise that none of these venues are preceded by the word Joondalup but they are all world class and located a very short drive from where we live.

One could argue that it would be ‘nice’ to have a performing arts centre in our City but at what cost?

And would it possible for this to compete with the major venues just 35 minutes away and become a successful destination for world class, big name acts?

To my untutored mind, it seems a bad application of resources in duplicating a facility such as this, at huge cost, when there are more pressing issues for the City of Joondalup to spend our money on.
