Tradition looks to continue

In his recent novel That Untravelled World, main character Harry Hopewell is telling his love interest Nellie and her South Perth family in 1912 about ‘another evening concert coming up at the zoo’. Harry reads from ‘yesterday’s paper’:

‘The same quartet that performed so well on the last occasion will return to the Zoological Gardens on Saturday 9th March. The grounds will be illuminated with hundreds of candles in Chinese lanterns and many-coloured hanging glass jars. The organising committee promises that patrons will be charmed by this ‘rainbow radiance”
