Wild seas braved by rescue crews

Justin Bianchini – EditorWanneroo Times

Water Police received the call from north of Mindarie and alerted Whitfords Volunteer Sea Rescue Group before battling heavy seas and strong winds in the 18m Cygnet 5 to reach Hillarys where Whitfords had manned its boat Green 1.

With wind gusts of up to 100km/h and a big swell, Whitfords made the decision to stand down its boat and two of its skippers went with the police on Cygnet 5 to provide local knowledge when an accurate co-ordinate was determined about 8.30pm.

While the men were putting their lives at risk at sea, Whitfords members went to the beach area near the Alkimos wreck with four-wheel drives before the skipper of the yacht was found safe walking on Pipidinny Road about 10.40pm.
