WANGARA aikido students were chosen to demonstrate their skills in front of high-ranking international instructors recently.
West Coast Aikido Academy of WA principal Ross Taylor and students Sophie Tighe (16), Zane Huntley (14) and Michael Thomas (12) participated in the Aikido Friendship Bridge Seminar over the WA Day long weekend.
The three-day training seminar was attended by aikido teachers from the US, UK, Japan and Australia.
Mr Taylor said Sophie, Michael and Zane held junior black belts and had been training in the martial art for more than eight years.
“They have shown great maturity and interest in representing aikido as not just as a way of defending themselves and improving their life, but by helping with teaching classes, they realise that they are also helping to improve the lives of other people,” he said.
“They came away with a new found appreciation of the differences in approach to technique from each style of aikido.”
