WANNEROO sisters Olivia (15) and Rebecca Osborne (11) have both returned from an Australian aerobic gymnastics competition as national champions.

The Kingsway Christian College students won gold in their respective individual categories at the Australian Aerobic Gymnastics Championships in Victoria, with Olivia also placing third in a team event.

“I felt overjoyed and quite shocked actually because I hadn’t expected it too much,” she said.

Both girls have been practising gymnastics since a young age and first represented WA in 2014, before going on to compete internationally.

Rebecca has been selected in Gymnastic Australia’s 2016/2017 Aerobics National Squad and hopes to make the team for the Suzuki World Cup aerobics event in Japan next year.

“If I do make the team again, I will feel so proud and excited to represent my country in such an amazing sport doing what I love,” she said.

Despite their early-morning and frequent training sessions, she said the sport was a lot of fun.

“What I enjoy about aerobic gymnastics is that it is a really fun way to do exercise and learn new gym skills and also meet new friends from all over Australia,” she said.

“I hope to become the best possible athlete I can be and hopefully next year if I can make the Australian team to compete overseas and my dream would be to win a medal for my country.”

Olivia, who is in Year 10, said it was challenging and “quite stressful” trying to balance gymnastics with school but wanted to continue competing.

“I try to time manage well and study or do assignments when I’m not training,” she said.

“I will have a break for a bit to focus on my schooling, yet will try to hopefully go to Nationals again.”
