A REAL “man overboard” retrieval a few weeks ago (Weekender, February 18) proved invaluable practice for second division winner Pinta skippered by Kevin Stacey in the annual Man Overboard race last Sunday.

Show Me (Bruce Ellery) and Zinfandel (Sue Osborne) were the minor placegetters.

Keelboats at Hillarys Yacht Club (HYC) incorporate this race not only for practising the real thing but also for racing safety compliance.

The real man is replaced with a bucket tied to a fender to be retrieved once upwind and another downwind, with the latter requiring the spinnaker to be doused and hoisted during the procedure.

In division one, Ryan Binedell on Low Flying Duck, fresh from offshore success a fortnight ago, was fastest in the light and shifting westerly however everything went right for Dean Giraudo sailing Murphy’s Law and they won by three seconds.

Third were Des Riley and Marshall Fox on Hard Evidence.

In division three a win to Geoff and Rita James on Panache over Sana 11 (Brian and Rita Buzzard) kept the Cruiser Cup alive with one more race in the series to go.

HYC is fielding several teams in the inter-club championships sailed on identical Foundation 36s to be held this weekend in the waters off Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club.

Hopefully the man overboard practice will not be called upon.
