Hopes dashed for Cup title

A contentious red card to the Gulls’ Steve McDonald in the second half, which both coaches thought was uncalled for, put an end to any chance Sorrento had of closing the 2-0 deficit.

Gulls coach Paul Price believed McDonald, who was sent off for a two-footed challenge, was hard done by.

‘He didn’t touch the player, even their player has said, ‘He didn’t touch me’, and the referee’s given it for intention,’ he said.

Opposition coach Graham Normanton supported Price’s point.

‘The red card was a bit soft I thought,’ he said.

‘It was maybe a booking at best but that’s how it goes sometimes. Good players go in with their studs up and referees send them off, which is what they’ve been told to do.’

Inglewood scored its two goals in the first half, courtesy of Shane Pickering (15′) and Daniel Thomson (39′).

State Premier Division soccer returns this weekend with Sorrento taking on Armadale at home. ECU Joondalup will clash with Cockburn City at ECU Joondalup Stadium.
