But Madeley tennis fanatic Charlie Jones has gone one better this year.
Instead of watching his sporting heroes in the lounge room, the six-year-old enjoyed a VIP trip to the Open as one of 12 nominees in Tennis Australia’s Tennis Hot Shot of the Year program.
Tennis Australia recognised his commitment to the game when he was named Hot Shot of the Month back in February.
The youngster admitted he was not the best player at Harbour View Park in Hillarys, but said he had a great coach who reminded him to ‘keep going and concentrate hard’.
He said he had never seen live tennis before and was looking forward to cheering on the Aussies.
While in Melbourne for the tournament, he attended a Hot Shots awards night at Melbourne Zoo, practised his tennis skills on Rod Laver Arena and watched the world’s best fight it out on centre court.
Charlie was beaten to the major Hot Shot of the Year prize by seven-year-old Jayla Tran from Victoria, who received $5000 and a year of free coaching.
