Surfing with precision and flair, he snatched first place from former national champion Justin Redman, of Yallingup. Using his repertoire of new and old-school manoeuvres, Clark edged out Redman by less than half a point.

‘It’s been a long time away from competitive surfing for me, but the break has done the trick I guess,’ Clark said. ‘We’ve been so lucky this weekend and I can’t wait for nationals.”

Redman finished ahead of the ever-stylish Mark Mattisons, of Cottesloe, and youngster on the rise Hugh Mitchell, of Lancelin, in fourth.

Redman made up for his open loss by winning the over-35 masters and his first State title since 2002, while Hugh Mitchell, of Lancelin, won the under-21 pro junior division and the State title.
