Light breeze stirs sailors

Ryan Binedell’s crew on Low Flying Duck continued their winning way, ensuring a series win in Division 1 with third place-getter in the race Mark Pitt’s Mulberry cementing second place in the series.

John Akers (Synergy) finished second in the race. However, he missed three races, dropping him down to fifth overall. Deckchairs Overboard (Neil Harrison) also missed half the series, but a first and second placing saw them finish third in the series ” one point ahead of Murphy’s Law (Dean Giraudo).

In Division 2, Covert Operation (Bart Brouwer/Graham Atkinson) lowered their colours to Blue Chip (Keith/Deborah Fisk) in the final race, but with three wins on board they were never headed for the overall winter series.

Show Me (Bruce Ellery) continued to show improvement with a third place in the race and second overall.

In Division 3 (jib and main), going into the final race any one of three yachts could have won the series and race winner Catabatic (Rob Bills) drew level with Perle (John Bird) on points and won on a count back with more firsts.

Salamander (Bruce Bradford) had sailed into second place (fourth in the series) relegating Vaya Con Dios (Chris Blackney) to third in the series. But it was a gutsy effort from Chris having been a consistent winner only to be marooned with an injury.

Yachts and crews will now have a well-earned, though short break before the Grand Parade and Commodore’s Cup heralds the 2014-15 season opening on October 5.
