MASTERS racing was held at Wangara on the Australia Day long weekend.

Stephen McNeilly returned to racing in Sunday’s event, going straight into A grade, where he secured an 11th place.

In B grade, Mark Welford worked hard in a four-man break for the majority of the race before they were caught with just two laps to go.

In a bunch sprint finish, John O’Boyle finished best for Northern Beaches Cycling Club in eighth.

In C grade Alastair Saw held his own in the middle of the pack and sprinted strongly to claim seventh.

D grade saw many attempted solo breaks by different riders, all of which were caught by the peloton before the final lap.

Dave Williams, who had celebrated becoming an Australian citizen the day before and was racing on his birthday, positioned himself perfectly on teammate Chris Howard’s wheel into the last bend and appeared unbothered on the false flat sprint finish, overtaking three riders to take the win with less than 50m to go.

Teammates Chris Howard, Fermin Blanco Mayo, Peter Ebden, and John Hoye placed fourth, 10th, 11th and 14th respectively.

Dave William’s first place helped propel NBCC to the top of the points ladder with 196 points, with Gary Suckling Team (192), Unicorn Racing (186), Team Brooks (155), and Eddy Hollands Bicycle Services (151) rounding out the top five teams.
