NORTHERN Beaches Cycling Club (NBCC) continue to climb in the rankings after the weekend’s West Coast Masters criterium event held in Kewdale.

NBCC promoted their partnership with Act Belong Commit with a social barbecue breakfast alongside the course.

The highlight of the event was NBCC’s team tactics in the D grade race.

With 10 of the 18 riders representing the club, the commissaire pre-warned the other teams of a likely team strategy.

Adrian Quick went on an early solo break, and as he started to tire, Fermin Blanco Mayo (NBCC) and Darren Lee (Team Brooks) bridged the gap to work with him for the remainder of the race.

Trusting in Blanco Mayo to have an aggressive final sprint, the remaining NBCC riders checked the pace of the peloton to help the break stay away.

Blanco Mayo led out of the final corner and sprinted away for the win, with Lee second and Quick third.

With minor placings important for team points, Matt Cruickshank sacrificed his race to provide an early lead-out for team mates Peter Ebden, Chris Howard, David Maartens, and David Williams who placed fourth to seventh respectively.

The win and minor placings helped NBCC move within a single point of league leaders Gary Suckling Team (177 points).

Consistency has also helped NBCC riders position well in the 264 rankings, with David Williams (seventh) John Robinson (11th), Chris Howard (14th) Matt Cruickshank (18th), Alex Rogers (19th) and Fermin Blanco Mayo (24th). Racing resumes on January 27 at the local circuit at Wangara. Local riders are welcome to trial masters racing.
