Phoenix women slip down the ladder

Coming off a four-goal loss to the league-leading Melville Marlins the previous Saturday, the Phoenix and Bears battled for second position at Beatty Park this week.

And it was a contest that went right down to the wire between the second and third-placed teams, but it was City Beach who prevailed 8-7 in a frantic finish to the round 17 match.

Claire Pierce and Jessica Reynolds scored two goals each for the Phoenix with Zoe Stenhouse, Claire Rechichi and Alicia Anderson scoring one goal apiece.

The result had Phoenix slip to third with six wins, seven losses and a draw from 14 matches in the 2015-16 women’s premier league season.

The Melville Marlins remain top of the standings with 11 wins from 13 games with the Bears now second on seven wins, five losses and a draw.

Just behind the Phoenix are Triton (five wins, eight losses) and the Dolphins (two wins, nine losses, two draws).

The Phoenix have a bye this Saturday while Triton play the Melville Marlins and the Dolphins take on the City Beach Bears.

Following the bye, North Coast will return to action on Saturday, February 13, against the Dolphins at Beatty Park before the final of game of the season at the same venue against Triton.
