Rider injured in multiple fall

Cycling in hot conditions, some riders had early wins, including Edward Rose in E- grade and Chris Coote in D-grade.

However, club president Chris Howard said those were overshadowed by serious injury to their teammate Duncan Rogers.

“On the final lap of the C grade race, several riders came down,” he said.

“Rogers, the most seriously injured, was quickly attended to by on-site paramedic, Carmen de Rooze, and NBCC teammate and registered nurse Rebecca Schultz. Together they stabilised Rogers and kept him immobilised until the ambulance arrived.

“This turned out to be a critical response as Rogers was subsequently found to have a fractured vertebrae. They were the true heroes on the day and have the immense gratitude of the entire club.”

Howard said Rogers was recovering in hospital and already talking of a return to racing.

“Thankfully a prompt emergency response was possible on the controlled race circuit,” he said.

“The event organisers, West Coast Masters Cycling Council, responded professionally by cancelling all subsequent races to ensure safety of injured riders on course.

“The club has requested a review of the incident to identify and address any factors that may have contributed to an otherwise safe course.”
