Sailing: Hillarys to Mindarie results

Lucy JarvisWanneroo Times

In the brisk 18-knot east-south-easterly breeze on April 10 it was straight-line drag sailing for the division one cats setting top speeds approaching 12 knots.

The only look-in for the mono-hulls were Dart Vader (Wayne Pitcher) on the way up and Perle (John Bird) on the way back for their third placings.

In division two Covert Operation (Bart Brouwer and Graham Atkinson) was first and fastest with John Newman on Sublime and Chris Grant on Pandora not far behind.

There were different personnel on the podium for the division two return race, with Mark Taylor steering Helga home for a win and Kevin Stacey (Pinta) kept Pandora at bay by just 15 seconds. Covert Operation was fastest again.

A duel between Catabatic (Rob Bills) and Panache (Geoff and Rita James) in division three ended with the same result in both races: Catabatic fastest but Panache first on handicap.

With only the Hillarys to Rottnest and return races to come in the eight-race Ocean Series, the battle is between the two catamarans and the two monohulls Mulberry (Mark Pitt) and Dart Vader in division one and between Helga and Pinta in division two with challenges expected to come from Covert Operation and Pandora.

Catabatic and Panache are on equal points in division three.
