THE State Motocross Championships for seniors and juniors kicked off with a double header in Geraldton over the May 14-15 weekend.

For seniors, there was a change to the series with the introduction of a qualifying round.

Despite leading the MX1 class from gate drop to flag end, local rider Charlie Creech finished the round third on 85 points, trailing Robbo Lovett on 99 and Dean Porter on 97.

Meanwhile in the MX1 repechage class, Scott Petricevich took three race wins to finish on 105 ahead of Wade Shephard on 92 and Michael McKellar on 84.

Petricevich also dominated the veterans class again with 105 points from Trevor Unstead on 96 and Dean Castlehow on 86.

Local rider Josh Adams was just shy of a perfect round in the MX2 class, finishing with 102 points followed by Justin Hart on 93 and Luke Davis on 92, while defending champion Dylan Heard, also from the northern suburbs, crashed in the last race, damaging his points charge.

The MX2 repechage class was tightly contested with Corey Woodhead winning on 88 points ahead of Cory Perkin and Bailey Houston both on 87.

With last year’s number one and two quad riders Chris Bosnakis and Shaun Woodhead competing in the USA, previous WA and Australian champion Luke Gaisford dominated the round to secure 105 points, with Tyron Robertson scoring 96 and Ashley Mills 90.

The women’s championship had a record 23 entries with local rider Jess Moore topping the table on 105 ahead of Lily Kent on 94 and Hannah Bagnall on 90.

Another change to this year’s series was the new all powers challenge feature class. Jess Poletti won the round on 100 points followed by Ethan Slape on 96 and Corey Ablett just behind on 95.

Round two will be at Noble Falls on June 19.
