Tennis and hockey clubs receive funding

Councillors at last month’s council meeting approved a grant of $19,860 to the Sorrento Tennis Club for its elite development program and $15,559 to the Joondalup Lakers Hockey Club for its junior high performance program.

City officers had recommended councillors not approve the hockey club’s grant request because information was missing from the application.

The club was given more time to submit the information needed but the next submission was still missing details.

However, at the meeting Mayor Troy Pickard moved an alternative recommendation to approve the hockey club’s request subject to the club resubmitting the application before June 13.

‘We recognise that these individuals who run these clubs are volunteers and sometimes these submissions do occupy significant time for our volunteers,’ he said.

‘The funds are there, the officers’ report indicates that it is a good initiative, it’s just some documentation that’s missing.’
