FIVE West Australians have been selected to play soccer on the world stage in Thailand this month.

Banksia Grove’s Taneesha Baker, Hamilton Hill’s Isabella Wallhead, Coogee’s Hana Lowry, Tijan McKenna, of Wattleup, and goalkeeper Miranda Templeman of Brentwood have been selected to play for Australia at the 2019 AFC U-16 Women’s Championship.

Under the leadership of head coach Rae Dower, the 23-player Junior Matildas squad will compete in Group A, taking on Japan this Sunday, Thailand on Wednesday, September 18 and Bangladesh on Saturday, September 21.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals.

Should Australia reach the final of the championship, they will qualify as one of Asia’s representatives for next year’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, which will be hosted by India.

Football West head of development Jamie Harnwell said it was great to see five West Australian girls earn national selection.

“It’s testament to the hard work of the players and their coaches, and credit to Football West for putting in the resources for them to continue to develop their careers,” he said.
