JOONDALUP was unhurried in a six-wicket win against Wanneroo, chasing down the hosts’ total with fewer than six overs remaining in the WACA Premier Cricket northern derby on Saturday.
Batting first, the Roos nearly saw out their innings but fell for 186 with two balls left in the one-day contest at Kingsway Sporting Complex.
A bottom-order rally saved the home side from embarrassment after Wanneroo had fallen to 7-88.
Number eight Donavinn Fryer (38) and Matthew Leach (34) combined for a 54-run eighth-wicket stand to be the Roos’ most productive scorers.
Joondalup quick James Boyland led with figures of 3-51, supported by Clint Hinchliffe, Aaron Todd and captain Michael Swart, all taking two wickets.
The visitors did not rush themselves in reply, winning the match in the 44th over led by new recruit Michael Johnson (57) and contributions from Hinchliffe (43) and opener Garrick Morgan (32).
Wanneroo’s Josh Quelch (2-42) was his side’s best with the ball.
Two wins to open the season has the Centurions at the top of the table with a superior quotient to the remaining undefeated teams Gosnells, Bayswater-Morley, Rockingham-Mandurah and Perth.
Wanneroo are in last position after two losses.
