West Coast will be better

AFTER a pre-season which seemed to be strung out forever, it was nice to be playing for premiership points again when we opened the season against the Western Bulldogs last Saturday night.

It was good to get the juices pumping again and the excitement around the playing group was electric.

Unfortunately, we did not get the result we were chasing, with the Bulldogs proving better in the clutch moments, but we know we can improve sharply on the effort.

One of the positives out of a night, which fell short of our expectations, was the introduction of two draftees from last November Jackson Nelson and Tom Lamb.

They both earned their opportunity and will be key players in the future.

All of the senior boys have been impressed with Jacko and Lamby since the day they arrived, as well as Liam Duggan, Damien Cavka and Alec Waterman.

The two boys who debuted last week will benefit from the experience and I reckon they will get better with every game.

Jacko shows good poise down back in the heat of the contest and Lamby adds energy and enthusiasm to the forward line.

If we put the result to one side, there were some encouraging signs from a few guys who continue to develop. Blokes like Jamie Cripps, who kicked five goals, Jeremy McGovern and Elliot Yeo down back, are all exciting prospects.

While the result on Saturday night was very disappointing, we have to remind ourselves it was round one and we can certainly get better.

We get another opportunity against Carlton tomorrow night at Domain Stadium and we look forward to playing in front of our loyal fans.

Hopefully, they will fill the ground, provide a spark when we need it and help to get us over the line against the Blues.
