Open to all artists, there are seven categories including Open, Emerging, Heritage, Indigenous, Local Resident and Youth, with a new 3D category being introduced in 2019.

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said the awards would represent the rich cultural diversity of WA.

“The City’s annual Art Awards provide artists both young and old with a fantastic opportunity to showcase their creative talents,” he said.

“Whether it is making space for a home, a space for thought or a space for sharing with family and friends, artists in the 2019 Art Awards are invited to show us what space means to them.”

Art Award curator Jude Van der Merwe said one of the first things noticeable about Rockingham was its sense of space.

“The flat terrain, the calm ocean and massive skies, all combine to create space,” she said.

“There is a sense that we can see further, are closer to where the ocean meets the sky, the sky meets the land, the land touches the seas.”

Selected artwork will be exhibited at the Gary Holland Community Centre and Rockingham Arts Centre from Saturday, May 4 to Sunday May 19.

Entries for the Art Awards close 4pm on Friday, February 22.
