Fergus the Farting Dragon: Baldivis author comes to terms with the ‘f-word’ in new children’s book

Vanessa SchmittWeekend Kwinana Courier

FERGUS the Farting Dragon is the latest children’s book by Baldivis author Monique Mulligan.

Illustrated by Veronica Rooke of Warnbro, the story delivers the message that being different is ‘hip’.

Fergus is different to other dragons. But when people make fun of him, he has an ear-splitting, eyewatering, toe-curling, stink-making response – he farts.

When a cheeky knight in a fire-proof suit steals a precious dragon egg, the other dragons are at a loss.

It is left to Fergus to get the egg back from the thieving knight.

Ms Mulligan said it took her years to be comfortable saying that F-word.

“But two boys soon got me over that and I realised two things: one, that kids love stories and jokes with the word fart in them; two, so do grown men,” she said.

“And so I decided to write a book about farts.

“Well, not farts as such, but about something that farts.

“That was when Fergus the Farting Dragon was born.”

Mulligan especially had fun with rhyme in the story.
