THE Village Green will be transformed into a melting pot of aromas and delectable ingredients this Saturday for the City of Rockingham’s first International Food Festival.

Appropriately beginning at midday, the event, part of the City’s Summer Series, will run until 4pm and organisers expect more than a thousand hungry locals will turn up for an afternoon of international flavours.

Visitors will be able to sample Spanish, Moroccan, Italian, French, Egyptian and Malaysian foods among others, and enjoy live performances from Silver Clefs Harmony Chorus, Taoist Tai Chi Society of Australia and Bailey O’Donnell.

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said the event would be an interesting new concept for the community.

“We have received so much interest from the community about the festival that City officers have had to double the number of food trucks and supporting amenities for visitors,” he said.

“It is looking like it could be quite a popular new event. We were not expecting so much support for what was originally going to be quite a small, local event.

“It’s really great to be able to offer a new free event for the community as part of our Summer Series, and I hope it is well received.

“While this is a fun new concept for the community it also fulfils a component of one of the aspirations for strengthening our community under the community plan; the bigger picture is that events like this help to build capacity, cultural awareness and community connections.”

The International Food Festival is an alcohol free event.
