Mother knows best

AS we celebrate Mother’s Day today, Rockingham entrepreneurs share the best advice they received from their mum.

Mark Pink, Pink Duck Beach Bar

The best bit of advice my mum gave me was: “If you generally try to do the right thing by your family and acquaintances, as a rule it should come back to you. If it doesn’t, keep trying a little harder.”

My mum would say “always set money aside for a rainy day” and “when the bills came in the door love went out the window, love is good and necessary but you can’t pay Synergy with it.” She was born in 1925 and always had a dollar if you got stuck.

Janice Chantler, Yappy Days Small Doggy Daycare

The one thing that’s always stuck with me is my mother told me to “always brush your teeth twice a day and gargle – you only get one set and they have to last you a lifetime.”

Kerrilee Versfeld, Lovely Leaf Designs

I would say the best advice from my mum was to be brave, take risks and put your heart into everything you do but above all, be authentically you. My mum’s creativity and strength inspires me every day.

Rebecca Cutten, Cutten Real Estate

My mum’s pearls of wisdom included “you can dislike immensely but never hate,”

“never go to bed angry” and “never let someone leave without telling them you love them as you never know what might happen.”

Lucas Lang, Dentistry Plus and GP Extra

The best advice my mum gave me was to do a dental technician apprenticeship 20 years ago when I was 16 years old. If it wasn’t for that, Dentistry Plus wouldn’t exist. She always taught me to work hard and she is still working today. In fact, she now works for Dentistry Plus. I was very proud to be able to hire my mum.

Gemma Heaney, HBG Tax & Accounting

The best advice my mum has given me is in recent years; not to be too hard on myself and that I am a great mum and a great boss. As a working mum, it is easy to be hard on yourself. I wouldn’t be who I am without her help.

Jacqui O’Connor, Rowson O’Connor Hair

My mum would always say: “If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”

Amanda Joseph, Milly & Wy

The best piece of advice my mum gave me in life was to never give up. A positive attitude and self-belief have made me who I am today thanks to her. I am sure she would have been very proud of my successful small business.
