Baldivis MLA wants kangaroos relocated, not shot

Gabrielle JefferyWeekend Kwinana Courier

BALDIVIS MLA Reece Whitby is demanding the developer of Paramount Estate relocate kangaroos, regardless of the ‘kill’ licence they have from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA).

He said the developer, Spatial Property Group. had created the situation and were ultimately responsible for the fate of the kangaroos.

“I am calling on them to take the lead and relocate the animals – it is their land, their estate,” he said.

“They are going to make millions of dollars from this estate – the least they can do is save these kangaroos.

“It will take time and extra effort but it can be done.”

The developer had originally proposed shooting the animals on the site in their submission to the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.

“That would have been horrendous – they should not be shot there or anywhere,” Mr Whitby said.

“DBCA rejected it so they had to resubmit and they were approved on the resubmission to tranquilise then cull them.

“I don’t care what licence they have – they need to relocate these animals – they can do it.

“It should have never got to this point.”

Mr Whitby said residents deserved better.

“The residents don’t want this – they are really quite upset about it,” he said.

“A developer trying to sell blocks does not want to be known as ‘kangaroo killers’.

“If this happens it could set a precedent.”

Mr Whitby said he was lobbying the DBCA but ultimately the developer had social responsibility to ensure the safe relocation of the animals.
