Be a ‘good egg’ and donate blood this Easter

A FEW good eggs – 159 of them to be exact – are needed to help boost blood supplies at the Rockingham Donor Centre ahead of the Easter break.

The Australian Red Cross Blood Service needs 159 extra donors in the next three weeks to provide enough supply for cancer and road trauma patients.

In particular, more donors are needed for Easter Monday which has just four appointments booked.

Blood Service spokesperson Gina Tracey said Easter was one of the most challenging times of the year to collect blood.

“The need for blood never takes a break yet we know that donor numbers are traditionally low at Easter” she said.

“A component of blood called platelets has a shelf life of only five days, so it’s important that blood is donated over and immediately after the Easter break. Cancer patients in particular rely upon platelets to help them through their chemotherapy treatments.”
