WHEN it comes to locally handmade sweets, a Secret Harbour-based business is the bee’s knees.

Since 2017, Bee Popped has had customers all abuzz over its salted caramel popcorn and chocolate treats including the best-selling milk chocolate brittle and rocky road.

Business owner Tarryn Fitzpatrick produces about 15kg of 13 different products per week to satisfy sweet tooths at markets or pop-up shops in addition to filling online orders.

She took the plunge and launched Bee Popped after making baby shower favours for her sister Brooke.

“Everyone raved about my popcorn favours and asked me to make more,” she said.

“At the time, you couldn’t find handmade salted caramel popcorn anywhere local and it got me thinking.”

Mrs Fitzpatrick began experimenting with different ingredients and cooking methods, sending batches to family, friends and her husband Clint’s work mates for feedback.

The winning formula includes quality ingredients such as Swan Valley honey, which proved best for infusing the caramel popcorn with great flavour, no preservatives and care.

“I work in small batches because bigger batches just don’t give the popcorn the same effect,” she said.

“That’s the hardest part, as well as avoiding burns from the salted caramel.”

Freshness is also a priority, with treats made to order and heat sealed in 100g, 200g or 400g bags.

A family affair, Clint, their children Taylah and Riley, and Brooke help with label printing, packaging, deliveries and postage, building market stands and serving customers.

Lovely Leaf Designs, also based at Secret Harbour, provides the personalised labels and tags for customers wanting wedding or other celebration favours.

Mrs Fitzpatrick said new products are in the pipeline.
