BERTRAM West Coast Eagles fan Austin Melville is taking on the role of Dig Deep Day mascot after he endured a devastating loss due to cancer.

Austin (7) met West Coast Eagles and Cancer Council ambassadors Luke Shuey and Andrew Gaff at the launch of the Dig Deep Day fundraiser last week.

Austin and his younger brother Hudson lost their mother, Donna, to secondary breast cancer at the age of 36 in October last year.

The boys’ father, Colin, said the family had been through a traumatic time in the three years before Donna’s death, when she was first diagnosed with cancer.

“To lose Donna at such a young age has been incredibly difficult and heartbreaking for my boys,” he said.

“So it’s a joy to see Austin so happy in his role as Dig Deep mascot.”

The Dig Deep campaign, now in its 13th year, helps the West Coast Eagles raise much-needed funds for Cancer Council WA.

This year’s sale item is a mini football for $5. All proceeds raised will be donated to Cancer Council WA.

Dig Deep Day is on Saturday, August 12, coinciding with the West Coast Eagles’ round 21 clash with Carlton.

The West Coast Eagles are hoping to raise another $100,000 this year for Cancer Council WA to help provide support to the 12,000 West Australians who are diagnosed with cancer each year.

West Coast Eagles Dig Deep mini footballs are available now from Caltex outlets, the West Coast Eagles Team Store, the Cancer Council WA Shop and will be on sale around the ground on Dig Deep Day.
