WELLARD Square Gifts and News owner Ned Vulin said his store was open just 19 days before it was broken into overnight.

Mr Vulin was in Melbourne at a gift fair sourcing more stock for the Newspower shop when it was first targeted on Sunday night.

The door was damaged that night, then targeted again in the early hours of this morning to gain entry.

“It happened about 4.15am and someone had tried the door the night before as well but didn’t get through,” Mr Vulin said.

Two stands of jewellery, small change from the till tray, and cigarettes sold by the lotto centre and newsagency were taken this morning, despite the store having motion sensors and eight CCTV cameras.

“Police forensics came and got fingerprints,” Mr Vulin said.

Mr Vulin said security guards are present in the area during the day but there was only so much security shops could implement, short of resorting to bars that ran the risk of also deterring shoppers.
