HUNDREDS of motorbike riders will be tasked with bringing black dog Winston to heel this Sunday as they converge on Bunnings Baldivis for the Black Dog Ride.

The annual ride for suicide prevention’s mascot is a soft toy named after Sir Winston Churchill, who famously kept a diary on his wrestles with his own ‘black dog’ of depression.

The ride is a national event with organisers expecting more than 7000 riders across the country to take part on March 17.

The Baldivis event is a one-day ride departing from Bunnings Baldivis carpark to arrive a couple of hours later in Dwellingup at lunchtime.

Black Dog Ride’s Baldivis co-ordinator Chris Glover believes just checking in with people can make all the difference.

“It’s mainly about letting people know that help is out there, people do care,” he said.

“It’s important, just a simple phone call to someone you haven’t seen for a while can make all the difference to their life.”

“Ring up, stay in touch or call in and see somebody.”

“It’s often said ‘boys don’t cry’ or to ‘toughen up’, but it’s ok to talk; it’s okay to share your feelings when things aren’t right.”

Mr Glover said it is his fourth ride and in his experience many people appreciate the opportunity to talk.

He hopes that this year’s ride will get more people talking and most importantly seeking help for depression.

Motorcycle enthusiasts are encouraged to join the ride to show their support for suicide prevention.

It costs $30 to register with the money going to mental health services such as Lifeline.

Registrations and donations can be made by visiting Black Dog Ride’s website www.blackdogride.com.au
