THE City of Rockingham paid tribute to volunteers from local advisory and emergency groups during a special celebration at the Gary Holland Community Centre last night.

More than 100 volunteers and guests were on hand to celebrate the contribution of the City’s advisory and emergency groups, with the occasion marked by the presentation of the National Medal to Bert Scarrott from Singleton Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade.

Mr Scarrott was presented with the medal in acknowledgement of 35 years service as a volunteer and the fact he has risked his life to protect the community on numerous occasions.

Mayor Barry Sammels said the volunteer celebration was an important opportunity to recognise those who dedicated their valuable time and effort into making Rockingham a wonderful place.

“While we live in a time where everyone seems busier than ever, we are fortunate to have a number of volunteers willing to put up their hand and go the extra mile,’’ he said.

Ten emergency services groups and 16 advisory committees and working groups were acknowledged during the celebration.
